Residents in and around the East Bay city have been speculating what would take over the 40,635-square-foot building since September 2021, when the Emeryville Planning Commission first approved an unnamed tenant. Most expected a cashier-less Amazon Fresh, based on the color palette of the exterior awning — a bright, neon green — as well as the secrecy that shrouded the development, a common Amazon tactic.

As it turns out, the new tenant at the shopping complex will be Tokyo Central, a Japan-based grocer and retailer, according to a press release from CenterCal Properties, owners of the Bay Street property. The store is slated for 2025.
